Yogyakarta – Can you imagine how complex it is to manage tons of infectious medical waste safely? The long distance from the hospital to the final medical waste treatment site can increase the risk of illegal dumping, cross-contamination, and disease transmission due to a chance of accidents or human errors during transport time. Indonesia needs sustainable technology solutions that can easily monitor and report the waste management to comply with the global environmental health policies.
UNDP Indonesia through SMILE Project has been supporting the Ministry of Health to develop an IoT-based Medical Waste Management Information System (WMIS) and successfully run the app training and trial with the RSUP Dr. Sardjito in Yogyakarta which disposes 800-900 kg of infectious medical waste per day. The app accommodates data collection and analyses on the waste management process, such as waste segregation, weight, treatment, and disposal in a real-time manner.
